Compression

Compression, recession, dusty avenues…
when you were far away you were beyond my touch,
but still able to ease the pain to which I’d too often clutch.

Roads rendered empty on their way to nowhere…
our destination was a place I too long held in reserve,
now rendered hollow without the possibilities we deserved.

I thought I’d known loneliness in my life…
I thought I’d forever cling to the place where you were,
but your absence has rendered my lifeline a chain-less anchor.

So here I am gazing into your ghostly eyes…
I move slower these days due to the compression in my chest,
knowing no destination remains in which this heart might invest.

Memories puddle beneath my unfocused eyes…
walking, grasping for all that once made us laugh,
it’s on that dusty avenue that I realize what I’ll never have.
