Those struggling to quell their darkness as best they can
too often find themselves shunned by those who don’t understand.
Those who turn away
seek to sooth their own psyche,
never recognizing their own shame.
They silence their guilt
by purging their heart’s compassion
until heartlessness and illness are one in the same.
Look away, they may, so as to not understand distress,
but in so doing they risk looking into their heart’s cold darkness.

*Normally I’d have posted last Saturday, but I was so consumed with NaNoWriMo that I forgot what day it was. My apologies. In a related story, I passed 50K last night and am an official NaNo winner for 2015. I’m not stopping though because the story isn’t yet finished. If you’re participating, don’t give up!
