A Word

The sun lagging while I chased my shadow…
unsuspecting was I in the afternoon heat
heading for the pedestrian tunnel ahead.
There in nature’s void there was
a single word to give me pause…
contemplating, but not relating,
for it too closely echoed the hating engulfing us all.
“Why,” I asked in sorrow,
“must we destroy to accomplish change
rather then create and innovate to save?
When the end comes,
when our legacy is collecting dust,
what single word etched in forgotten memories will define us?”
