Avenue of Wonder

Avenue of wonder,
ever widening road to my imagination,
showing me greenery in winter
and peace in our time.

This breaking heart
sees the signs lining the edge of nowhere,
weathered gray in the day
and withered life by night.

Silent witnesses
crowd a road devoid of compassion
where old lives wave goodbye
and futures turn away.

Avenue of wonder
please open my closing eyes again,
please stir my heart anew,
please—fill my soul with wonder…

  2. Christine such a stunning image and thoughtful poem. I think I had forgotten how hard it is for people to cherish the small things, when life gets messy. Yet when I lost my brother I had a taste of darker days and lost my gift of positive thinking for many years. Its back thankfully yet now I know how hard it is to be grateful when the world feels empty. You live in such a beautiful place.

    • Thank you, Kath. I’m walking that road knowing how much beauty there is beyond what I see, and all the time I’m fighting hard to open my eyes wide enough to see beyond the ugly. I don’t know why it’s harder this time, but that doesn’t make my determination any less.
