The Shell Game

Some shells are simple,
while others cripple,
not protecting a life,
but those who are empty inside.
Changing shells,
below the sea or on the beach,
are we sheltered in loneliness
or out of reach?

The shell game,
hiding guilt and blame,
no different from yesterday,
no different today.
Trading one shell for another,
yet hiding the true self,
the only good reason for a new shell
is personal growth.
